Ten Things of Thankful - Week 28, 2017

The above image is a quote that says "Happy are those who take life day by day, complain very little, and are thankful for the little things in life." No author is cited. The text is printed in black on an off-white background next to a round clear pale blue vase filled with white lilacs that form a canopy across the top of the photo above the text. A bright green leaf and a few green stems can be seen amidst the flowers.*

Happy Weekend!  The above quote makes me smile. I am thankful that I am able to do the first part and the last part fairly well, but I find that part in the middle about complaining very little to be more difficult. Have you ever tried to go a whole day without complaining and come to realize just how often you think or say something negative?  It's convicting, but I'm working on it! I am thankful that I have another day to work on being a more positive person!

I am also very thankful that Papa Bear is the most uncomplaining person I know, no matter how tired he is, or how unfair life is, he so rarely grumbles, and just takes it as it comes. He is a good role model for me!

I am thankful for the General Manager at Papa Bear's work, a much younger man than him, who told him this week how much he appreciated Papa Bear's help and knowledge gained from working there over thirty years.  It always feels good to know that you are appreciated!

I am thankful that Papa Bear will be off this Saturday. He works six days a week, and gets one Saturday off a month. He gets so tired and needs that downtime! We won't be sleeping in on Saturday though, as we have the security alarm installer scheduled for 9 AM. That leads to another thankful... a new and much better security system that is less expensive and has it's own Wi-Fi so doesn't require a land line phone.  It will save us money, work better, can be controlled from our phones, and is much safer since there is no outside phone line that could easily be cut by an intruder. Having been through break-ins in a past chapter of my life, I feel much better having a security system.

I am thankful that Papa Bear loves cats as much as I do. He had one before he met me that lived to be twenty years old; it was an indoor-outdoor cat, so that's especially rare. We started out with just one cat which we adopted when I moved to Texas to be with him. Now we have four inside, though we have had five when we were caring for one of my daughter's cats for awhile when she lived in an apartment. He is patient with the ever-flying kitty fur from all of them having long hair, and he enjoys news of the outside feral visitors too, letting me know when Andy is waiting on the deck for supper. He recently installed an expanding "baby gate" across the stairs to the deck to prevent the neighborhood roaming dogs (a real problem in this area) from coming up on the deck in attempts to get the food in the kitty feeder. What we won't do for our furkids! :-)

I am thankful for prayers answered. One of my daughter's cats that is only six months old went into heat (yes, they can start breeding that young) so she took it to be spayed this week. Its post-surgical recovery was a little more stressful than most, while it seemed to be in pain the vet tech said it was just having a bad reaction to the anesthesia. My daughter was so worried and stressed, and felt bad for her kitty. Thankfully, the next morning it was doing so much better and is now on its way to recovery. I am thankful, too, for responsible pet owners who spays/neuter their pets and also for groups who provide low-cost spay/neuter options. If it was more affordable there would be fewer unwanted babies being born. Cats multiply amazingly fast!

I am thankful that our neighbors finally ran out of fireworks! Their 4th of July celebration went on every evening for almost a week, stressing out the furkids and at times rattling the house. I am all for celebrating and I love rockets as much as the next person, but explosions just for the sake of noise gets annoying. One tipped over and exploded on the ground instead of the air, and I am so thankful that none of them were injured, it could have happened so easily.

I am thankful that my son had an awesome birthday! When he lived alone he didn't have a birthday cake and this is a much enjoyed tradition in our family. This year his girlfriend and her son got him a wonderful cake. I am so thankful for all the blessings this relationship has brought to him and how happy they are together as a family. I could not have asked for a nicer person for him to share life with. She truly loves my son and to a mother that means everything!

I am thankful that my younger sister has discovered the joy of Internet friendship through getting to know some of the people she regularly plays in Words With Friends. In the past she never understood how I could be close friends with people I'd never actually met, now she has a couple close Internet friends that she visits with on the phone and via email, and has discovered how much those relationships can brighten your days, especially when your children are grown and gone and you spend more time at home alone.

Last, but not least, I am thankful for the beautifully cool, overcast morning. It is rare here that I can be out on the deck writing at 10 AM without being baked and blistered by the hot sun, so this was a lovely treat. The clouds are piling up and perhaps we will have rain later.  Cooler weather, even for just a few hours or a day, is such a gift!  And on that note, I think I'll head out for a little drive with the windows down, I need to go to our tiny-town post office and pick up Toby's meds at the vet clinic. Wishing a wonderful, relaxing weekend to everyone!

Blessings to you this week. Look for reasons to be thankful in your life, and remember to be a blessing to someone else!

  2. Wonderful things to be thankful for. Papa Bear sounds like an amazing man. I am glad your daughter's cat is OK, poor kitty. Also glad you are getting a better security system. We can't afford one so if we are going to be out longer than 30 minutes, my Mom comes and stays with the cats. My fear is them escaping or getting hurt by intruders. Have a nice weekend!

    1. Papa Bear is one of God's very finest creations! :-) My daughter's kitty is doing fine now, healing nicely and active as ever, whew! Having your mom close by is such a blessing for you and your furkids, I always worry about mine too, alarm or not. I don't want them frightened or hurt!

  3. "..thankful that our neighbors finally ran out of fireworks!"
lol best line this weekend. We were lucky this year, for whatever reason, the neighborhood scotts did not try to reenact the landing at Normandy. (scotts are not too picky about accuracy, they just like loud noises. no, seriously, they like loud noise. If you're ever at an organized fireworks event and in the middle of the deafening roar of explosions you think you hear someone yelling? ...scott. lol)
The temperature still makes me envious. The summer here in New England was been on-again/off-agin temperturistically-speaking. A couple of nice days in the high 80s and low 90s followed by a week of rain and clouds.

    1. LOL, Clark! I am totally the opposite of a Scott when it comes to noise, I am supersensitive to loud noise of any kind, it stresses me out, having it amplified by my hearing aids only makes it worse.

It's funny about weather, we always tend to wish we had something different. I am grateful for our mild winters here and Spring and Fall are pretty decent, Summer is ungodly hot though, like sticking your head in an oven hot. I would be quite happy with cool, rainy days.

  4. Break-ins are so very unsettling. We had several in the house I lived in growing up, even a few when I was home. Scary. It's amazing now how everything works through the smart phones. A lot more control.

I was just talking with a friend about cats and she has four of them as well. I can't imagine. I only have one, but the hair seems to be everywhere. I can't normally see it and so it doesn't get cleaned up enough, until someone happens to mention I am covered in it.

Glad you had a cooler than usual morning to write and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

    1. Yes, break-ins are very disturbing, it is such a feeling of being violated, having your personal things rummaged through, not to mention the danger involved if you encounter a thief. I do love the ability to do so much with our smartphones, no need to silence the alarm with an armload of groceries, it can be shut off from my phone before I get out of the car, and turned on the same way when I leave.

A cool morning here is such a rare thing, it was much enjoyed!

  5. I only like fireworks when I am watching it from a safe place. If I am just hearing it and at times there should not be any . . . I get annoyed and uncomfortable.

    1. I agree with you about fireworks, I love to watch the colorful aerial displays, but I do not like lots of loud explosions and most definitely at times before and after the holiday. It is rather rude to do this in a neighborhood, disturbing everyone's peace.

  6. Roaming dogs? Strays or wild dogs??? Cool about the security system! I bet PB is a major asset to anywhere he lands...he seems like that kinda guy!and I do not know how you stand that heat down there. I would be a walking blister!i/z

    1. Roaming dogs, some strays, some from area farms where the owners just make no attempt to contain them. They run loose here, and often get hurt or lost, it makes me angry at the owners and sad for the animals.

I was very happy about having the improved security system at a reduced cost, win-win!

PB is definitely an asset at work, at his lodge, and any place where he happens to be. His picture is beside integrity in the dictionary, or it should be!

I detest the summer heat here, it is way too hot to enjoy being outside doing anything, and doesn't begin to cool down 'til sundown. I can't be out in the heat at all, it makes me sick, not to mention that I burn very easily. Thank God for A/C and staying inside!

  7. I try to remember to not grumble and complain but too often I am forgetful. It's a battle for sure. Having Papa Bear is a blessing to those around him! Great that he is appreciated at work. Would be nice if they would reward him with an extra day off now and then. We had few fireworks this year, usually they are going off all weekend. Something I didn't complain about. I think it is hotter this year than in the past or maybe just more humid. Trying not to complain. :) Have a great week!

    1. It is indeed a battle, Patricia, so easy to slip right back into that frame of mind!

I agree, I wish they would reward Papa Bear's dedication and years of service with a shorter work schedule, he wishes they would too, but then of course they would also reduce his pay, not so good.

We don't complain to our neighbors about the fireworks, because it just sets up a negative dynamic that would likely cause more problems and annoyance down the road. It's kind of a grin and bear it thing, except for the one that exploded on the road and rattled our house... Papa Bear did go out on the deck and give them "the stink eye" on that one!

It has been a long stretch of hot here too, and summer is just half over in West Texas, it stays hot until October. I am thankful that I don't need to be out during the hottest parts of day, like I did when I was working. Those blacktop parking lots made our cars 20 degrees hotter than outside at the end of day! Thank you for stopping by, I appreciate you! xoxo

  8. I'm glad your Papa Bear's experience and work is appreciated. That makes for a pleasant place to work.
How scary that must have been for you to have experienced a break in at one point in your life. It sounds like the new security system is just right for you.
Do you have skunks in your area? People here have to feed their cats and dogs inside, because skunks and raccoons will try to get the food put outside for their pets.
It would have been difficult not to complain a little from fireworks continuing throughout the week. How annoying. One of the dogs we used to have was terrified of fireworks.
It sounds like your son had a wonderful birthday.
Yeah for a cooler morning in your area.

    1. It definitely helps Papa Bear to feel better about working, Pat. Having your house broken into is very scary, it leaves you feeling so vulnerable. I had said before that I didn't want to mess with an alarm system, but that changed my mind!

We do have skunks in our area, and they love cat food! I have seen skunks and cats eating side by side more than once. A couple years ago I nearly stepped on a baby skunk getting out of the hot tub!! It had come with it's mama and siblings for a meal! We learned that skunks are not good climbers, so if we gate the deck steps they can't access the food and don't hang around. I really don't want to walk out one night and surprise an adult skunk!! :-) We don't have any raccoons in our neighborhood, though they do live in West Texas and are often seen around oil rig drilling sites where they get into the dumpsters looking for left over food in the trash.

It was frustrating that our neighbors are so new to the neighborhood but had no concern for the peace and quiet of those around them. I try to maintain good relationships so we were tolerant this year, another year I might suggest that enough is enough, it went on for a whole week, so they must have spent a great deal on fireworks!

My son had a wonderful birthday, in fact his life is really good right now and that makes a mom happier than anything, when her kids are doing well!

I will be glad when cooler mornings are more regular here, that usually happens in October.
