The Gift

Recently a dear friend gifted me with a new Bible after I told her how much I liked the translation she was using in her posts (NLT).  She sent a beautifully bound, large print volume, soft to the touch and gentle on senior eyes.  When I opened it randomly for the first time to read a passage, I was given another gift, one of Presence and Love.  The Bible opened to John 4, which just happens to be my favorite story, that of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well.  It has personal meaning to me.

The chapter goes on to tell the story of Jesus healing a child who was about to die.  This came at a time when I was very worried about one of my own children.  I believe there was a promise for me in those verses, hope I desperately needed to dispel the anxiety that was overtaking me.  I could not have chosen a more perfect place to begin my day, and I had to smile at the sweetness of being led to something not only familiar but so very close to my heart.

The Nightly News

My husband likes to watch the nightly news on tv. I used to, I do want to know what's going on in our area and in the world.  But either the news has become a nightly house of horrors, or I have become more sensitive to all the negativity in recent years.

On any given night here our tv stations present story after story of all the dark regional, national, and international events, laying them one atop another until I feel suffocated by all the misery in the world.  Most surely it exists, we would be fools to deny that.  But, dear God, are there not also newsworthy events that might lift our spirits and restore our hope in humanity even a tiny bit?

For me, the issue is one of emotional saturation.  I know terrible things happen to people, to good people, to innocent people...I know, I know, I know! I don't have to be reminded via graphic description and video every night of the abuse, the neglect, and the violence, the devastation, and the loss.  I get it! It horrifies me.  How can so many things go so wrong?  Watching this endless spew of negativity before bed each night is a sure ticket to nightmares and daytime anxiety over all that could go wrong in your life or the lives of those you love.

I believe that public education is important.  Issues kept under wraps have a tendency to grow and multiply.  I am not in denial about the existence of evil in our world.  I just don't want to be bombarded by it in new reporting with no semblance of balance.  It depresses me, it makes me want to scream at the insanity, and cry to know that people could do such horrible things to one another.

I am told that sickness sells, and that this is what people want to see, that there is a fascination with "train wrecks".   I fear that what we really have is the desensitization of our society, overtime shock gives way to indifference and the eventual acceptance that what we witness on tv is the norm of life... it's "just the way things are".

What if just for twenty-four hours a ban on negative news reporting was put in place and enforced? News stations would have to redefine what was newsworthy to report, reporters might actually have to get out there and look for some  uplifting stories to fill that time slot with.  They are out there, you know it and I know it too.

So it all comes back to us, if we don't watch this nightly crapfest the ratings will go down.  If we began campaigns to bring decency back to the nightly news would they listen?  I think perhaps the bigger question is does anybody even care.  My husband says it doesn't bother him that much, he just watches to learn about major events and is able to tune out the rest.

Maybe it's just me, I've never been able to tune out hurt and horror, whether I know the victims or not, it tears at my heart and soul. I want to make it better, I want us all to think about how we can make it better... and we could begin by shining a light on the good things that do happen, or at least focusing on some of the things people are doing in response to what's gone wrong.  I think that it's long since time for a channel called The Good News!

Choices

One of my favorite "speeches" to young people is about the importance of making good choices.  How do I know that?  Because I am the poster child for making poor ones and experiencing the consequences.

Obviously, we have to make some mistakes growing up and even as adults, that's how we learn best... from what didn't work.  But I'm talking more about the big decisions, the ones that have far reaching consequences on our futures... the friends we choose, the partners we choose, whether or not to practice birth control, obtain more education, move to another city, or make major purchases.

It is so important to consider how our choices will affect our lives in the long run, and what kinds of consequences we might expect to experience if we choose wrong.  I had an older friend who always said to wait three days before making major decisions, giving time for the emotions of the moment to die down so that you could look at the situation objectively, I can see now that she was right.

So many choices that "seemed like a good idea" at the time I now find myself pleading "temporary insanity" as my only excuse, including my three previous marriages in that!  It's hard not to react from the emotions of the moment, whether it's regarding a relationship or the purchase of a new car. We tend to focus on the "feel good", or at least I do, and often choose to steer away from any choices that I might be afraid of, even if it could actually prove to be something good for me.  Sometimes we rationalize our choices when I think deep down we know it's probably a mistake.

I was talking with a friend this week who owns a dog that doesn't wear a collar or any identification.  Why, I asked, yet again.  Her response was that when the dog was a puppy it really disliked a collar and would stagger like a drunk if one was put on him.  I asked how long she had tried to get him used to it and she said a couple days.  It reminded me of what happens when you first try to put a cat on a leash, they collapse on the ground as if you're killing them.  LOL   I thought to myself that perhaps she could have worked with it a little longer, or tried another style of collar.  I asked her about a harness... no, she didn't want to confine him in one of those, they don't look nice.  Okay, is he at least micro-chipped in case he gets lost (which he did once when he was very small and miraculously found his way to someone's door). No, he isn't.  The dog goes with them everywhere, even on out of town car trips, so to me that's pretty risky.  My cats wear collars and ID tags even though they never leave the house except for vet visits or stroller walks, but if they did get loose by accident, there is at least a hope that they would be recovered.

I found myself wondering if one of her sons had not wanted to wear clothing when he was young, would he have been permitted to go to school naked?  When does it fall on us to make the adult decisions for those not really able to make good ones for themselves?

This same friend is continuing to wear contact lenses most of the time, despite the fact that her eyes are constantly very dry and irritated and despite the fact that her ophthalmologist has told her that she is risking injury to one eye in particular.  Why does she do this? Because she "just can't get used to glasses" and thinks they make her look old.  She is nearing sixty.  I told her, only partially joking, that I didn't want to have to lead her down the halls of the nursing home someday because she'd gone blind due to her unwillingness to ditch the contact lenses.  And yes, I know that many people really prefer them for many reasons.

As I sat here, somewhat baffled at her life choices, I realized how many equally poor choices I've made in my own life, many more than she has, and certainly some with the potential for equally grave consequences.  It is so easy to look other people's weaknesses and flaws with a magnifying glass, and to attempt to minimize or make excuses for our own.

From now on, I think I'll spend more energy worrying about my own choices, and find more ways to encourage others rather than criticize or condemn... at least until I become perfect myself, which isn't likely to happen in this lifetime.  There are ways to suggest alternative views to those we care about, but finding fault or pointing out flawed thinking  rarely results in change.  I need to stop being picky me, that isn't who I want to be!

Life Cycles

Autumn has a way of reminding me of my own mortality and rapidly advancing years.  I've already lived approximately three-quarters of my life, which amazes me.  How did it all go by so fast, and why does my body feel so much older than my mind thinks I should be?

Leaves make the perfect example of life cycles.  They start out as tiny, hopeful buds in the early Spring of their existence, then mature to sturdy, deep green leaves that hold tight during summer storms.  Autumn comes, and just as they reach their most vibrant and beautiful color they begin to loose their grip and wear thin.  Before long they will become fragile and the first strong wind will send them swirling to the ground, where they decay and return to the earth.

We are like that too, becoming in some ways more beautiful, and perhaps more self-assured in our "golden" years, then succumbing to gradual deterioration and the changing winds of time.  I truly wish it didn't end that way, and that we all could go out in a blaze of crimson glory, but when I watch a beautiful Autumn leaf being set free at last and floating slowly to it's resting place, I think perhaps it's not such a bad thing, this letting go and returning from whence we came.

A New Beginning

The private blog I started not too long ago just wasn't working.  Sometimes people could access it, sometimes they couldn't, and I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.  I don't want anyone to have to jump through hoops to visit my blog and read what I share.

So... here we go again - a new blog - and a new name, sort of.  Here I will be just "J".  If you have found your way here by invitation, you already know who I am.  If not, it doesn't really matter.  I just feel the need to have a place where I can share my more personal thoughts and experiences more freely. We'll see how that plays out.

I won't be sending out notices when I post something here, because you will be able to follow it in your reader or by email (see the link in the sidebar).

This blog also has it's own Google email address (on the sidebar), but you can use any email address you have to contact me, I monitor them all. :-)

Any questions or suggestions... just let me know!
