This above image is a quote by Karen Salmansohn at notsalmon.com printed in black lettering. It says "When you get something you've really wanted, stop to appreciate it. Don't always be seeking something better." The background is comprised of overlapping pastel shades of turquoise, green and white with a marbleized effect.*

Happy weekend to you! I am enjoying the quiet of this Saturday morning as I reflect on all the good things in my life. I love the quote in the above image, because it seems like it is easy to get into the habit of never being content with what we have or what we've been given. When something we've really wanted happens, we immediately start thinking of the next thing and the next thing, with barely a pause to be grateful. Maybe we don't need to want something else or something more so quickly, and just maybe we already have ENOUGH! :-) I often ask myself if, despite some of the struggles we all have in life, I am content with just what I have. Do I need more to be happy? The answer is a solid awareness that at this stage of my life I am enough and I have enough. My life is blessed, and I am thankful for that. I think the endless wanting of more leaves us feeling restless and unfulfilled. Calm is a much nicer place! This weekend is Father's Day in the US, a time to pay tribute to the fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers, and any others who have taken on the role of father or mentor in our lives. They don't have to be male, many mothers have had to fill both roles for their children. I am thankful for my own father and for all of those who have chosen to protect, care for, provide for, and encourage the children in their lives, and their adult children too. I am thankful for the good memories I have of my father and that he always provided well for our family.
I am also aware that many, along with Papa Bear, whose father died when he was three, grew up without a father, or never knew their father, or experienced the horror of living with an abusive father or step-father. Father's Day can be sad time for them, and my heart goes out to them and I pray that they've encountered other people in their lives that provided some of the love and direction they needed. I also think of the fathers and grandfathers who will not hear from their children or grandchildren this weekend or most weekends. Please, take time to let your loved ones know that you cherish them. Give them a gift of your time and your presence in their lives!
I am thankful for the wonderful father Papa Bear is to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and to my children. He listens, cares, encourages, and offers advice when asked. He is never overbearing, recognizing that they have to make their own choices in life and learn their own lessons just as we did. He always ends a conversation with any of them by saying "I love you", and they will remember that long after he is gone.
We have had huge amounts of rain here this season, a very rare occurrence. I am thankful when the rains come in the early evening dropping our triple-digit temperatures by thirty or more degrees very quickly, it is so welcome! We have had several thunderstorms, with a particularly severe one on Wednesday night that left over 19,000 homes and businesses without power in the city near us and a terrible amount of damage to homes and autos with high winds and softball sized hail! I am thankful that no one was seriously injured and I am thankful that where we live, Northeast of the city, we only had a little wind and small hail with no real damage. I am thankful for the power crews, city workers, teams that come in from other areas, volunteers and everyone who is working together to help deal with the effects of the storm. I was also thankful to learn that the city's large arena was opened by the Red Cross to provide shelter for not only people but also their pets if their home was not habitable or if the heat put them at risk. Blessings to those who remembered to include the pets!
I am thankful that my husband's daughter who returned to our city recently was able to secure a good job as a dispatcher and began working yesterday. It is a large company with room for advancement and the pay is better than average. This will enable her to begin rebuilding her life.
I am thankful on behalf of a close friend of my sister's who was received approval to be placed on the waiting list for a liver transplant. She lost her twin sister several years ago and has been sick for a long time. This could be the miracle in her life, and all prayers are appreciated. Her name is Candi.
I am thankful for Google Photos storage! We've been backing most of our photos up to the iCloud and it is cumbersome and problematic. If you delete a photo from your phone it also deletes it from the iCloud storage and any other shared devices, like your computer. Google Photos is simple to use, automatically saving photos from your various devices to one account, and accessing them is organized and easy. It's also free for high definition photos. I am in the process of uploading photos from old laptops, etc now, and then will begin the long process of weeding out the ones that don't need to be saved so I can at last find the important ones that are mixed in. Google Photos also has several cool tools you can use to create collages, slide shows, and photo books. This is not a paid endorsement for Google, I'm just happy to find something workable at last! :-)
I am thankful that Papa Bear and I rented the movie "The Shack" to watch this week. I read the book several years ago, and most often the movie versions disappoint me, but this was an exception. It is very well done, the characters are great, and the message is intense and powerful. At points it made us both think of things in our own lives, and while that can be uncomfortable it is also a message that we need to address issues that have left hurt inside our hearts. I highly recommend it to anyone, the perspective on God is so refreshing! One of the thoughts I took away from it that I will remember is that sometimes when we forgive someone it isn't a one-time event, we may find that we need to forgive them in our hearts and minds many times if hurt or anger resurfaces. But there is power and freedom in forgiveness.
I am thankful for Toby snuggles! When he was a kitten he loved to crawl up on my shoulder and snuggle next to my neck. Now when I am writing at the table or sitting in the recliner, he still does that, hauling all 15+ pounds of himself up on my shoulder where he snuggles in next to my ear and his belly rumbles with deep purrs while he kneads my shoulder in contentment and rubs his nose against me. He can be such a brat at times, but when he does this he just melts my heart, no matter how difficult it is to write with a large cat hanging over your shoulder. :-)
Most importantly, of all the thankfuls I will ever list and share... I am thankful for our Father, Creator, Great Spirit, Supreme Being, Greater Power... or whatever name you choose to call God by. Without His love I would not be.
Blessings to you this week. Look for reasons to be thankful in your life, and remember to be a blessing to someone else!

Thank you again for a wonderful TToT post. I agree that "calm is a much nicer place."
ReplyDeleteThinking of softball size hail and the destruction it could cause is mind boggling. People must have been running for protection and hoping the shelter they found was enough.
I have the book, The Shack, but I haven't read it and now the movie is available. Time to read and to see! Forgiving can be a recurring thing. Eventually, you recognize the pain is gone and you know then that you really have forgiven.
Maybe having a cat resting on my neck and shoulders could be a massage therapy cat, but a 15 pound cat might be too much. LOL
Calm hasn't really been in my life until these years with Papa Bear, and now that I am not working which was very stressful. It feels so good to enjoy the quiet and slower pace, time to think and breathe!
DeleteThe size of that hail was unbelievable! It crashed through roofs and ceilings leaving water pouring into houses, smashed cars and windows, etc. How terrifying to be out in, and for animals too!
You are right about true forgiveness releasing the pain. It is a wonderful feeling to finally reach that. I am certain that you will really like both the book and the movie. Reading the book first makes the movie easier to understand from the beginning, since it is an unusual premise.
My cats love to "massage" my thighs as they softpaw endlessly before settling in to nap. I assure them I am quite soft there already. :-)
My heart goes out to those who suffered because of the storm. Candi will be in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteMine too, Mimi, especially the many low income people without adequate insurance or funds to do repairs. Groups are helping, but it is never enough, and occurred during a time of such high temperatures, further compounding the suffering. I am praying for Candi too, I really would love to see her have another chance at enjoying life!
Deleteexcellent oT this week. Although, not to be contrarian (yeah, like thatever happens) but triple digit temperatures! sounds like climate that I would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteMonster hail, on the other hand, is not such a charming notion. And losing power is never, ever a fun thing.
Thanks again for hosting this here bloghop here.
Contrarian... I love that word, Some people love heat. I love warm... like tropical 70's, I do not like cold winters, they make me hurt. I did enough years of them growing up. But I do miss the beauty of snow, and I miss the green stuff like you have there. Monster hail is scary stuff! It leaves people so vulnerable because houses, cars and heads are open targets. We've never had a bad one where we live, not enough to do damage, but I always worry the day will come. It seems like the weather is going by extremes this year. We've lost power in both summer and winter and both are issues with pets in the house and of course grumpy me! We have a generator now for such emergencies, enough power to get us by in a crisis.
DeleteI appreciate your thankfulness for the TToT blog hop. It is a happy part of my week! :-)
I read The Shack some time ago and have it on my Netflix queue. I will be seeing it from the comfort of my swivel rocker in my living room...with popcorn and a Coke that won't cost much. Though the chairs at IMAX sound like quite an experience. Great news about your family! I had a cat,Dolly, that like to drape around my neck like a shawl...fortunately she was only seven pounds. As always your TToT is beautiful and encouraging. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI think having read the book first made it much easier to understand what was happening in the beginning of the movie. It is excellent. We enjoyed the Red Box rental at home in our recliners too! :-) I do not think the expensive treats at movies are necessary, but Papa Bear feels that for as seldom as we go they are part of the experience. We always share a drink. The chairs at the IMAX theater were really fun during the on screen explosions, you could feel them, not just hear them! :-)
DeleteI wish Toby was a lighter 7 pounds like my Sophie is, she is a featherweight, but prefers lap sitting... and must be held if we are! Toby has the best purr in the whole world though, it rumbles! Thank you for stopping by, I am still trying to play catchup on blogs, it's impossible!
Oh, that Papa Bear! It's a shame he can't be cloned. He sounds like an amazing guy!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping severe weather is about over for the summer. The trade off is high temps and lack of rainfall, so that's a tough call.
Google keeps telling me I've used up all my space. I don't know whether to believe them or not.
Nora cuddles against my neck, too! She prefers me to be lying in bed, and she nuzzles my hair with her nose. She's done it since the day I brought her home, and it's soooo sweet, but she's already 11 pounds and she gets heavy!
Have a lovely week, Josie!
If I could clone Papa Bear, I could become very wealthy by selling duplicates, he really is an awesome guy! :-) I hope we will soon be moving past the severe weather too, but alas it pretty much is part of summer here. We will take the rain any day, the risk of wildfires is much scarier than hail.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Photos has two kinds of storage, unlimited free storage for photos sized for viewing, and a limited storage for full size photos. I don't know how much it costs to add more storage, I know with iCloud the additional expense is minimal. You can sign into Google Photos and find out what you need to do to resolve their space issues. I have something like 15000 photos stored there now, much of which will be deleted when I get the time to clear out the clutter.
I love bed snuggles! I used to have a very large Maine Coon kitty that liked to sleep on top my chest with his face close to mine. I miss him. Unfortunately, Papa Bear is a very light sleeper and I have allergy issues, so it's best to keep our furkids out of the bedroom, although if it was just me I wouldn't, but he needs sleep for work so it's only fair. So far I am having a good week, thank you! I'm keeping busy, boredom is not a word in my vocabulary. :-)
Papa Bear is amazing and such a blessing to you.
ReplyDeleteCalm IS a much better place. I don't know that I am truly in a place of calm right now. Working on that.
I've heard good things about The Shack, but I don't want to watch the film until I've read the book. That's just how I roll. Thanks for reminding me I wanted to check the library for that.
Our photos live on an external hard drive we both have access to. I'm not a fan of storing things "out there" in the world. I'm sure the cloud is a fine thing, but it bothers me for some reason.
Hope to make it in here next time - weekends are just so busy for us so I don't get around to the posting of a TToT. I sometimes try Monday or Tuesday, but truth is that almost no one comes back to read and that's honestly a little sad and frustrating. So we'll see.
Hope your week is going well! xo
A lot of pressure in today's culture for going after/having, the "next best thing". Very sad.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine a little how frightening storms in Texas must be after living in Florida almost 10 years. Triple digit temps though? No thank you. No wonder your storms are so horrific. Changes in temperatures too much and blaamo! I bet a thunderstorm can brew up in no time. I'm glad that you were safe and out of major harm's way. Softball size hail? No thanks!
Opportunity to rebuild one's life is a HUGE thankful. Congratulations to your husband's daughter, may she do well and enjoy her new job.
P.S. To Lisa - I'm still reading TToTs and its Wednesday :D
