This above illustration is of a young Caucasian girl around seven years of age that appears to be done with pastels. She is wearing a fluffy knee length yellow-orange dress, gathered at the waist, with short sleeves and a white Peter Pan collar. She is standing on her left leg, with her other leg lifted off the ground to the right, apparently dancing with joy. She is wearing black shoes with a strap across the ankle and white socks. Both of her arms are stretched straight out to the side with her palms extended. Her dark golden curly hair is shoulder length, parted to the side, and flying out around her face as if she is twirling. The shaded-in background is of pastel cream and sky blue and there is a dark brown band across the bottom which creates the floor she is standing on. A quote is printed to the right of the girl in the same dark brown color. It says "A joyful spirit is evidence of a grateful heart" and is attributed to Maya Angelou, one of my favorite authors.*

Well here I am, finally! It's Monday, the clothes washer is running, and I have settled into the quiet of the morning to work on my TToT wrap-up of last week. Papa Bear was off on Saturday, his one Saturday a month off for the month of June, and I opted to spend my time with him rather than doing much reading or writing. I can do that when he's not home. I am thankful for the time he has off to rest, do something fun, and catch up on a house project or two. It was a good weekend all around. As I put my load of towels in the washer this morning I realized once again how blessed and thankful I am for the conveniences we have... good appliances, a clean water supply, money for detergent and softeners, and the ease of having the washer just down the hallway from where I write. My mother made many trips up and down the basement stairs doing laundry for the family all day every Monday, and in the early years she also hung it all outside to dry. Our lives are so simple by comparison.
Last Wednesday was Papa Bear's birthday. He got the German Chocolate cake he'd been hinting for and pronounced it the best one I've made to date. It did turn out nice and he was really happy with it. We enjoyed cake for five days. :-) I also took him out for a seafood dinner. I am thankful he is so appreciative.
The above photo depicts Papa Bear's birthday cake. It is a tall, round two-layer cake covered in a traditional German chocolate cake cooked topping of caramel, coconut, and chopped pecans. It is setting on a white plate. On the top outer edge of the cake is a ring of red maraschino cherries and inside of that a ring of pecan halves. In the center are two large lighted blue candles in the shape of 6 and 4 in honor of his 64th birthday. He is seated behind the cake but the photo is cropped closely so that all you see of him is the gray fabric of his knit shirt.*
On Saturday we went to the new Cinergy Theater here and enjoyed watching Wonder Woman. It is the first movie we've been to in several months and the recliner seats and food trays made it very comfortable. The movie was far better than I anticipated, and we thankfully noted there was no foul language, no graphic sex scenes, and the violence fit within the story line and was in keeping with the positive message they wanted to relay... how refreshing! A reminder that something can be interesting and done well without being trashy. The vibrating seats of the IMAX experience made the explosions very realistic and fun! :-)
I am thankful for happy phone visits with both of my kids yesterday, and for photos of their lives shared via text. My daughter has been working on her house and yard, moving into the final phase of preparing it to go on the market, so she can sell it and move to Dallas. She and her husband found a great new apartment and got him moved into it over Memorial Day weekend. It has an open floor plan and lots of light. I am thankful she was able to help him choose and move and that she likes it. They will both be so glad when the move is finally done... and I will be VERY thankful, it's been a long process!
My son moved out of his Nashville apartment and in with his girlfriend and her young son this weekend. They've been together for some time now and I am very content with this. We really liked her when we met her and my son adores her. He is also really enjoying being a step-dad and they do a lot of fun things together as a family. The move will make it possible for them to save up money for a house. Marriage will likely be in the future, but not the immediate one. I'm okay with that too. I am thankful he has met someone who suits him so well.
We set up our game cam on the deck this weekend, now that we once again have feline visitors. The following photo was captured last night, and from another shot where our resident feral kitty had his tail to the camera lens, it was apparent that "Andi" is most assuredly "ANDY"! :-) I am thankful there will not be kittens. He is obviously young and sweet, and drops by early each morning, in the evening for supper, and several times during the night for another fill-up. We are thankful we can make his life a little easier, and we are enjoying watching to see who else shows up to eat. Last night a dark cat came in the early house of the morning, probably the small black cat we've seen a couple times now.
I am thankful that my younger sister and her husband got to spend several days last week in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota to celebrate their 30th Wedding Anniversary. They had a wonderful time and shared several photos of a place I love so much. One day I will be able to take Papa Bear there, God willing.
Last evening Papa Bear was collecting the trash to take out and decided to go ahead and change the furnace/AC unit filters too, since they get covered in cat fur quite quickly. When he accessed the furnace closet he discovered that the water drain line had blocked up and was dripping water unto the floor! We were both very thankful that he caught it now and not later when they floor would have been soaked and damaged. Although he was not planning to spend his evening getting the drain line cleared and working, and the closet cleaned out, it is done now and we can rest easy. I am thankful he knows how to do so many handyman things, that would have cost us a bundle if we had to call a repairman!
Last but not least this week, I am thankful for the Six Sentence Story post that came to mind on Thursday. I wasn't sure what to write, but I knew I didn't want to do something dark or negative, it is too easy for me to always go that direction. As I pondered it while driving home from town, the prayer I wrote was given to me almost word for word, I felt as if it was something I was meant to share. Not my typical offering, but most certainly something from my heart and well suited to this time. I was thankful for the positive response it received.
And now I'm off to fold the towels and wash the bed sheets...
Blessings to you this week. Keep your eye out for reasons to be thankful, and remember to be a blessing to someone else!

Days off together are priceless. Glad you had that. This blog and we who read it will be here when it suits you.
ReplyDeleteA seafood dinner and German chocolate cake sound like a lovely birthday.
Glad you liked the movie. I've heard mostly positive reviews. I got to see Beauty and the Beast, finally, and it was enchanting.
It's true that I think of how much work it was for my grandmother to do laundry for her big family on the family farm all those years. I am okay with having a few stairs to go up and down to do mine, if it means it is as convenient as it is. I live alone now and always worry about problems with my AC because I depend on it so much.
Stay cool.
Days when Papa Bear is off and we can spend them together are indeed priceless. The moments shared in life are what matter! Wonder Woman really was a good movie, and I went dragging my feet. :-) I often think of how hard our grandmothers had it, when everything was done manually for often large families, and most of the food was grown or raised at home. My Grandma lived to be 97 and was a breast cancer survivor, her ability to carry on has inspired me all my life!
DeleteThanks Josie, what a lovely list. The cake looks amazing! I too get fed up of films that seem to use excessive violence and sex just to try and make it more interesting. Give me a gritty story-line any day. Much more entertaining!
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say, there were no cake crumbs remaining by the end of the week. :-) It was so refreshing to come away and then realize how all of that over-the-top garbage was missing. While watching the moving we were enjoying it so much that it didn't feel like anything was missing or too sanitized. So very well done, I want more like that! Our society has come to accept garbage as entertainment.
DeleteI'll second that, 'excellent German Chocolate cake... (rare but enjoyable when growing up). Dodging bullets, or adverting (worse) problems surely are the must under-appreciated positive events. Probably because they are, on the surface negative occurrences, until perspective is brought to bear, as you did with the air conditioner. This bloghop is so helpful in increasing the chances of seeing the positive in a world all to ready with the negative.
ReplyDelete(Liking your photo descriptions. I've admitted in other venues that look forward to reading posts for the the opportunity to try to understand how good writing is done.. lol (like that phrase)... I mean, I do enjoy the content, but I get something just from trying to figure out how to do what I see you and the others do with the written word.
thanks
It was indeed fun to make something I knew Papa Bear would enjoy so much. Yes, many of the thankfuls in life center upon things that could have been so much worse if not averted in some manner. Another week or so and the damage done would have been considerable. I look at Kristi's short and sweet photo descriptions that are right on point and I see that I say too much, and would probably be confused trying to visualize the photo from my description. I'm going to keep working at it and try to focus on what the message of the image is.
DeleteMany blessings to you, i enjoy reading about your thankfuls!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mimi! I enjoy writing them, and even moreso I enjoy reading yours! I love how the TToT infuses us with so much positivity! I am smiling as I think of you enjoying your vacation this week! :-)
DeleteHow fortunate that the dripping water was discovered when it was and that your husband was able to take care of the repairs!
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how you might be excited to see the latest image on the game cam. It would be interesting to have one of those set up here.
Vibrating seats at the IMAX! Just relax and enjoy the movie! I'm glad that you enjoyed the movie. We haven't see that movie.
Beautiful SSS too.
Yes Pat, for once we can be thankful for abundant flying kitty fur, it instigated the furnace filter replacements that uncovered the problem. I am always amazed at what Papa Bear can take care of, young men today need more hands on training like he grew up with! The kittycam really is fun, to watch them come and go all hours of the night. Last night a neighbor's dog showed up to enjoy a free meal! The IMAX adventure really was fun, but I could not do it if it involved extremely fast motion or heights, then it would make me ill. It really is a good movie to see, it has a good lesson, which I was not aware of until seeing it. I'm glad you liked my SSS, it is one of the few things I've written that I felt really good with.
DeleteThat cake looks amazing. I'm salivating, but of course, it is all gone by now. I'm glad you had time to spend together and I'm also glad you avoided a repair disaster. Seems like we have lots of those around here, which I guess comes from a house getting older (as well as its occupants). I've never seen an IMAX movie, but I do enjoy the recliners in the theaters I've been to. If the movie was slow moving and uninteresting - I'm sure I would be snoring out loud. Last one I saw was Beauty and the Beast and it was wonderful. Laundry in the washing machine, settling down to read and write in a quiet house is a blessing.
ReplyDeleteThe cake had vanished just a few days later, Val, but Papa Bear has pointed out that the remaining maraschino cherries would be enough for a pineapple upside down cake! (I should not have shown him the photo of Paul's beautiful cake!) We don't do movies at the theater very often because Papa Bear feels drinks and popcorn are essential to the experience and they are nearly as expensive as the senior tickets now! We will enjoy this theater again though, so nice to have comfortable chairs instead of no leg room and feeling squished. My quiet house is a tremendous blessing to me each day, after years and years of noisy offices I do so love my quiet time!
DeleteI remind myself daily that I am lucky to have indoor plumbing and running water and a washer and dryer (although mine are in the basement and my bedrooms are on the second floor - more aerobic activity than I necessarily like).
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear your kids are happy and doing well. It's nice to hear that your son is enjoying being a step-dad. Those situations could easily go either way.
I need a game cam so I can know definitely who is pooping on the floor (it's either Pete or Fletcher - Nora is innocent). Are they hard to use?
My knees barely do a few steps, Dyanne, so basement stairs would be so difficult, though I could surely use the exercise. My mother managed basement stairs to wash despite severe RA, but she fell on more than one occasion, something I am very wary of. Imagine carrying all the heavy wet laundry back up the stairs to hang it outside to dry! My son and I talk very openly about step-parenting and how important it is to embrace that role with love if you are going to be involved with someone's children. I've lived both sides of it, and it doesn't always go well. I smile when I see photos of my son and her son doing fun things together, and him attending all the son's ballgames. He makes me proud. (And I've told her if my son ever slacks off in his relationships to let me know and I will personally kick his butt :-) Game cams are motion-triggered and work great to catch offenders. Very easy to use, you simply hang them to focus on the area you need to watch and the memory card will tell you the story with timestamps and images the following day. Most have night vision and they aren't too expensive. My daughter has a video cam which enables her to watch her cats 24/7 via her iPhone, it's very cool, but more expensive.
DeleteSounds like the week was lovely...except that Papa Bear had to do handyman stuff. Great that he is a handyman, though. Hope he gets the pineapple upside down cake for his hard work.
ReplyDeleteHe only has to spend a couple hours on Sunday evening fixing the cooler, so it could have been worse, or it could have stopped running which would be horrible in this heat wave. It makes him feel good when he is able to fix something, it just came as a surprise. He decided that he'd rather have brownies for Father's Day, so that's what he got, and he ate some warm from the oven! :-)
